Abuse testing helps determine the relative safety of a cell by exposing the sample to different potentially catastrophic conditions and measuring the result.
The U-M Battery Lab offers abuse testing of cells made in our facility or sent in from your own fabrication line or supplier. These tests are always conducted by Battery Lab staff on behalf of our users for safety reasons.
- For quantitative thermal abuse testing, we recommend the Thermal Hazard Technologies accelerated rate calorimeter.
- Physical abuse testing, in the form of nail penetration, is conducted qualitatively with video recording.
